Pours a little purple and is perfumed with delightful florals thanks to Confuron-Gindre holding off picking until late in the season when the grapes were sublime. Whole bunch fermentation means there’s a little dusting of white pepper that really helps lengthen the finish.

Full of old-world dry spice and enough French complexity to inspire Sartre. Fruit profile is all wild strawberry, red currant and raspberry, all winding out with savoury tannins. Great, expressive wine!

Domaine Des Gandines Bourgogne Rouge 2021

The Marsannay Champs Perdrix is a consistently elegant wine from one of the iconic vineyards of Marsannay, sitting above the village and bordered by pine forest. Fruit is sourced from vines planted to rocky soils over almost pure limestone—imparting a lovely mineral element to the wine—and is cold soaked before a long and slow ferment and being pressed to barrel, of which roughly a third is new. There's plenty of energy in the glass here, with briary fruit and a lovely acid drive complemented by a kiss of toasty oak, while some chew to the tannins brings about more grip and structure.

There's a little more weight and density of fruit in this cuvée that will lend themselves nicely to a rest in the cellar. More savoury on the nose with briary dark berries and a flash of lovely toasty oak spice.

Philippe Robert Fixin Entree Deux Velles Pinot Noir 2021

A wonderfully concentrated bottle to dip your toes into Burgundy with, but it would make a fine addition to the cellar if you can bear to wait. Classic as can be with plenty of earth and mineral edges up front complemented by red currants, more hints of earth and lovely dark cherry fruit. Sourced from a small vineyard in Couchey, fruit for this wine was hand-picked from vines aged 50-75 years before open fermentation in concrete and spending 10 months in old oak.

Pours and drinks pure, fragrant and moreish, with a fresh tannin, and red fruits that are persistent and mineral lead. Perfect with roast chicken, BBQ'd meats and almost soft cheeses–Gruyère, Comté. Sounds like an amazing meal.

Pierre Boisson Monthelie Rouge 2020

This one's about 3 parts Pinot, 1 part Chardonnay, which are planted on adjacent plots in Arbois over mostly limestone. The varieties are destemmed and blended before undergoing a year of élevage. It pours a vibrant cherry red and packs red berry, raspberry-orange and hint of mineral flavours lightly on the palate. One to enjoy with a friend or two.

L'Octavin Elle Aime Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2020

Another beautiful first release from Theo Dancer, who recently acquired vintner rights over the Roc Breïa, a prized parcel in Mâcon—southern Burgundy. The wine is 50% whole bunch and matured in 500L barrels and pours a beautiful ruby, to match its bright and juicy notes. Think full red berries, roses and plums on the nose with a smooth, buttery tannin structure. This one is both adventurous and inviting. A very special bottle indeed.

Metrat oozes brambly red berry fruit that is well-defined and seems to unfold from the glass. There's a zippy freshening line of acidity incorporating with 10% new oak, and the grapes get worked twice a day to increase extraction. Another glass? Oui!

Matrot Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir 2020

Enter this bewitching Pinot Noir, intensely ruby-hued in the glass with alluring fruits of the forest, lots of dried flowers, notes of earth and a smokiness of a freshly stubbed-out cigar. Thought-provoking and absolutely delicious.
