Mercer Wines Nouveau Shiraz 2022

Easy drinking and a good-time-kinda-wine, with cherry cola, sarsparilla and a nice dab of chalky tannin. There's a distinctly Australian and Italian feel, all at once, that makes it the perfect drop to drink while cooking a few snags—or Spiedini (skewers) on the BBQ! Made by the Chalmers family from the home estate and source of much of the Italian plant material we see especially in Victoria, but also across the country, hence the title Mother Block.

Straight up Barbera comes from Tumblong Hills' Gundagai vineyard, and undergoes spontaneous fermentation as whole berries, with a portion of whole bunches, before extended skin maceration for 21 days. The resulting wine is bright, fruit-forward and begging for a chill that will only add to the drinkability of the cherry cola sweetness and wash of cleansing acidity. Fill your glass, put on some Prince and start your own dancefloor with this drop.

With fruit from his friends at Yarrh and Poachers Pantry vineyards, Hamish has crafted a wonderfully floral wine, that blossoms with air; there are cool red fruits, a mineral streak, fresh acidity, and nice pepper and clove spice that leads to the lovely and long finish. Deftly played whole-bunch and new oak play great supporting roles.

Mada Shiraz 2021

It's a straight up and down, delicious cool-climate Shiraz. There's an almost-ripe mulberry tartness, rich red plum notes, and a smidge of white pepper bringing a savoury edge.
