A little warmer season made the fruit prevalent here, but when it’s blackberry, dark plum and sublime cassis we’ll take it. Of course, it’s balanced too, and there’s some tobacco and pencil shavings in there. A great one for that boujee Bordeaux or Cabernet lover you hold dear.

The Beechworth legends are at it again with Brunnen, a small patch over the track from VS&B main plots that keeps a very cool climate thanks to a natural subterranean water cycling. The result is a lovely Pinot Noir with finesse and balanced flavours, like sweet-spiced rhubarb and strawberry that flow with a healthy dose of silty tannin.

An ideal year for Beechworth's warmer and drier sites has produced outstanding fruit with excellent tannin development from Traviarti's Rosso and Black Springs Farm vineyards. Made from younger vines, this Nebbiolo is bold yet beautifully soft and approachable. Aromatic and savoury, with forestal cherries, earthiness, and bittersweet caraway seed spice. A nice pinch of structural tannin and fresh acidity.

Traviarti Mezzo Nebbiolo 2021

Sure to melt away the worries of the week, this local Syrah shines with violets and red berries on the nose. There’s lots of peppery spice, firm tannins, and a lick of new oak. It’s comfort in a glass.

Willem Kurt Syrah 2018

The varietal characters are ringing true, with a perfume of violets and green herbs meeting cascading red plum and a wash of sweet red currant on the palate. Rich yet accessible cocoa powder tannins bring some weight to the blend and give a nice spread for the flavours to carry on.

Sorrenberg Gamay 2021

Winemaker and all-round champion Tessa Brown first established her winery just outside of Beechworth in 2014, after having accrued a wealth of experience from her time at Sorrenberg. Along with her husband, Jeremy Schmölzer, who comes from an architectural background, the pair have been crafting pristine and elegant wines from a multitude of quality sites around Victoria, quickly earning themselves an enviable reputation. Roter is a blend of Shiraz, Pinot Noir, and Merlot from the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula, fermented as whole berries and aged in a mix of large and small oak barrels. It's lifted and bright, with a core of crunchy red and black berries along with a gentle imprint of peony florals. Easy-drinking and very accessible, this will happily take a slight chill if you should be so inclined!

Schmölzer & Brown Roter Red Blend 2020

A truly masterful example of Australian Cabernet, from one of Australia's most celebrated modern winemakers. Only made in extraordinary vintages, Téte de Cuvée is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (74%), Merlot (24%) and Petit Verdot (2%) from Beechworth's prestigious Smith's vineyard. It was aged in French oak barriques (50% new, 50% second fill) for 12 months, before being racked and transferred to old 600-litre thick stave oak casks for a further eight months. Alluring cedarwood aromatics, succulent blackcurrant, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and pencil shavings with beautifully poised tannins. It's drinking magnificently now (though it requires a lengthy decant) but will continue to unfurl and develop over the next ten years.

Loosely translating to 'The Cellar Blend', this is Adrian Rodda's interpretation of a modern Bordeaux blend. Featuring an all-star cast of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, Adrian's Cuvée de Chez will delight lovers of Bordeaux and modern Aussie reds alike. Crème de cassis, pencil shavings, redcurrant, and fresh tobacco leaf, with a lovely dusting of savoury spice and powdery tannins. This is an absolute treat!
