If you haven't tried this lesser-known variety from Piedmont, then be prepared to have a new love in your life! Pelaverga is referred to by Vittore Alessandria as "falso leggero" (meaning 'false light'), as its power and intensity can often catch people off guard due to the light hue of the wines it makes.
Fratelli Alessandria's Speziale Verduno Pelaverga is wonderfully perfumed and bright, with strawberry, mint and white pepper aromatics that leap from the glass. The palate shows lovely concentration, with an electric line of acid that weaves its way through ferrous minerals and gravelly tannins. A wonderful wine to sip with antipasti, though still playful enough to be an excellent pizza wine.
